We might think it’s alright to waste food but in reality, there are a lot of problems we are making. Perhaps like damaging the environment, wasting money and food shortage. In the future, these 3 things are the damages of food waste from the past. There are many more damages that food waste can do, but these are the main things happening at the current moment. But do not threat! There are solutions to these problems.
Americans annually toss more than 90kgs of usable food per person which is dreadful. America altogether wastes around $250 billion New Zealand dollars! This can cause major problems in America and all over the world, but, in America, all this food goes to the rubbish dump and the rubbish usually gets buried underground which leads to greenhouse gases.
Damaging the environment is a very major concern, food scientists and even normal people point this out very easily. But something that not many people can point out is that food waste is damaging the environment. Some people bury the rotten or just perfectly fine foods underground which leads to greenhouse gas that does global warming. Which can get worse and all living things die.
Do not try to be a perfectionist about food don’t spend 5-10 minutes trying to find the most perfect apple and throw the rest away. It is common sense that even if an apple looks disgusting it can be a good-tasting apple. And it’s not just apples but other foods too like pears bananas etc.
Something that a lot of people don’t do is checking the expiration date for your food. Nearly every single food has an expiration date. ⅓ of the food we waste is from old past food. But there are solutions to these problems.
As I told you don’t dread because there are solutions to these major problems. Using leftovers is a good idea, Maduaraty of people have leftovers from dinner or other times so don’t simply throw it away, use the leftovers.
We can do a lot of things with rotten food. For example, if an apple gets rotten then take the seeds out and simply just plant a tree, these small actions can change the world and stop pollution too. Another thing we can try is making it into compounds, if we make specific food types into compounds with apple, banana and avocados etc. we can grow plants better which saves the world and on top of that we don’t waste food.
Using alternate food like insects sources is a great idea. It can help with on our diet and might even keep us fit. Meat is one of the most used food sources and if it is used a lot then it would be wasted a lot too, So if we eat insects we can make a big difference between the future and now, we can make this world less wasting.
F.I.F.O stands for first in first out, this method is very helpful if you buy something from the supermarket then put the products that you just bought to the back of your fridge or pantry and put the old food to the front.
Educating each other about food waste is an amazing thing to do because when I grow up as an adult, our generation can change the whole world if you as a teacher or a parent etc. right now teach us about how to stop food waste we can actually change this whole environment or even this world.
Another solution is to keep an eye on the food you waste the most and buying less of that food. For example, I went to the store and bought potatoes pears apple and grapes, if you keep an eye on the foods check which one doesn’t get eaten as much, so stop buying that food a lot.
Many farmers are sometimes low on food supplies for cows pigs etc. so we can head down to a local farmer and give him/her the leftovers of food. The food supplies will be given to animals and most animals we eat, so now there will be more meat because the animals become fat.
There are billions of people who don’t have enough food to live, so donating food is an advantage for not wasting food. Schools and other places are bringing in food cans and other things in for the poor and unwell. Especially food bank is a company wich other people donate food to people who are poor and who have food shortages.
Though you still might be having a think about how damaging of a thing we are doing. There is still a big amount of damage to the world, wasted money and food shortage, but that can't stop us from stopping food waste so I’m telling you again don’t dread because there are solutions to this problem.
